Job de GrefteAssistant Professor | Business Ethics, Sustainability, and Finance | University of Groningen

I am Assistant Professor in Business Ethics and Sustainability at the University of Groningen. I specialize in business ethics, sustainability, and related questions in finance, with a research profile that combines philosophical depth with close attention to contemporary institutional challenges.

I started my career track in 2024. My work is grounded in normative philosophy and shaped by a sustained interest in responsibility, justification, and institutional decision-making. That foundation continues to inform the way I approach questions in business, finance, and sustainability.

I obtained my PhD in philosophy at the University of Groningen. Alongside my current research agenda, I draw on earlier work in epistemology, argumentation theory, and philosophy of science to develop analyses that are both conceptually rigorous and practically relevant.

I am currently running an NWO project on responsibility in the nitrogen crisis, and I am principal investigator of a project on the epistemic responsibilities of the financial sector. Together, these projects reflect a broader research programme on how institutions ought to act under conditions of uncertainty, contested values, and public scrutiny.

I teach in business ethics, philosophy, and academic writing, and I have experience supervising BA and MA theses. My aim is to combine intellectual precision with a clear, public-facing style of scholarship and teaching.
